Club life can have its perks for classic car owners

By Dave Chapman, Staff Writer

Car clubs have been around for ages, and while the focus of the each club may be different, the main reason for them — a love for the automobile — is the same.

There are many reasons for joining a car club, besides just hanging out. If you are going to restore a vehicle, a club could be of great benefit. Chances are someone in the club knows how to do the work.

If parts are needed for your vehicle, chances are someone in the club knows where the parts can be found or, better yet, have some stashed away. This can be especially useful for hard to find parts, which are often sold or traded strictly by word of mouth.

If you need a specialty tool, a club member may nowhere you can get one, or may even have one you can borrow. Who knows, if you are nice and supply some food and beverage, they might even help you use that tool.

Very few people can do all the work necessary to restore a vehicle and will need some work done by others. If nobody in the club can do the work, other members can tell you where to take the vehicle to get it done. And better yet they will tell you who not to take the vehicle to.

The brand specific (Mustang, Camaro, Corvette etc…) type of club is good if you are interested in a single type of vehicle. Belonging to one could be most helpful if you are restoring this particular type of vehicle.

Most clubs get together to socialize, with the money they make from 50/50 raffles, car shows and other fund-raisers going to help those less fortunate.

Recently, a group of Downriver-based car clubs decided to join together to help promote the Downriver community. They develop and support family oriented events via the display of the American muscle car, support a nonprofit concept while assisting of the needy and less fortunate, work together as a team in support of their mission, and, in the process, preserve American icons: classic vehicles.

The group — which is made up of the DAMM, (Detroit Area Mopar Muscle), Downriver Kruzers, Roam'n Chariots, Wanderers, and Wheels of Time — is called Downriver Area Car Club Association.

At this year’s Cruisin’ Downriver — set for its third running this Saturday — the DAMM group will be at Southgate Kmart. Along with the Downriver Kruzers, they will feature Davey G as a DJ.

The Blues Brothers are scheduled to play at noon and the Teen Angles will appear at 5 p.m.

The Roam'n Chariots will be at Southgate Ford and Fergie's restaurant, also in Southgate. They are scheduled to have a DJ at the Southgate Ford location.

The Wanderers will be based at the Saturn dealership in Southgate with a DJ on hand all day and the Pyramid Band making appearances through out the day.

The Wheels of Time club can be found At Leon's in Riverview, and they too will have a DJ.
